Last Steps Home
Overview
"Last Steps Home" is a cosmic horror game created for The Eye Jam II (theme: "Decay"). You must escape an encroaching decay wave that destroys everything in its path. Your mission: run from your office back home to reunite with your wife before it's too late.
This game was developed in just 3 days using Bevy (a Rust game engine), my first experience with the engine itself, adding an extra challenge to the development process. Despite being sick during most of the jam, I managed to create this intimate pixel art experience about cherishing what matters most.
The game's mechanics are intentionally simple, I admit, but my goal for this jam was to produce a mostly complete experience (menus, multiple states, sounds, etc.) to test Bevy's capabilities and uncover any roadblocks. I achieved that goal.
Gameplay
Controls
- Use your mouse to navigate menus.
- Press Space bar to jump.
- Press Space bar to skip cutscenes and certain story segments.
- Run away from the decay wave chasing you.
- Reach your wife at the end to complete your final steps home.

Known Issues
Once the voting period is over I'll provide an update but here are some known issues:
- Audio: Sound may be buggy or intermittent in Safari. Try using Chrome or Firefox for the best experience.
- Ending: The finale doesn't quite match my original vision — some sound effects are missing and animations end a bit abruptly due to time constraints.
- Code: The source code isn't public yet, but I'll refactor and release it after the voting period ends. The codebase got a bit messy under the time pressure!
